Google very often intervenes, with manual actions, penalizing sites that do not comply with the guidelines. A little-known but widely used penalty is to block  rich snippets  in search results for those sites that have a “dirty” backlink profile .

In a post on  the Webmaster Central Help Forum, a user titled his question “Rich Star Snippets/SEO not Displaying,” asking the group why Google wasn’t displaying rich star snippets even though the structured data testing tool was showing the reviews and wasn’t reporting any errors. User Chris added that he had crawled his site a few days earlier, but was still not seeing the stars in the search results.
